There's no Kelpie board, so I guess I post this here. This is Leah, she's Border Collie and Kelpie. She seems to have inherited more of the Kelpie influence. She's short haired, smaller, long-tailed, and looks like she's going to have prick ears, whereas her brothers were bigger and fluffier and looked like BCs. I just adore this pup! I also have a BC/aussie. I love the herding breeds, they can be highly energetic, without being spastic (like some of the hunting breeds), although a little neurotic sometimes. I'm not only ready for the energy, I'm looking forward to it!

Wow, Leah certainly IS a darling! Now I'm going to have to look for Kelpie pictures on the net, because I'm not familiar with the breed....

If you have an Aussie/BC mix, then you know all about high energy and the need for a job and being healthy-tired. I was thinking I would love to see a pic, but your second post evidentally HAS a pic. Going there now.

Awww, Leah is cute! Could you tell us more about a kelpie? I've never heard of this breed.

I can tell you *I* don't know much about kelpies except that I think they are herding dogs and on the smallish side....

Actually I went back and hit the AKC site to learn about Kelpies myself; they aren't on the breed list. So, I'm going for the Rare Breed Registry. Here is a website that explains about Kelpies http://www.barkingbuddies.com/tailwork.html I don't know where Tumbleweedchin is...maybe we could email her via the forum link and have her come back and tell us more about Leah!

Kelpie's are highly energetic compact herding dogs 25 - 45 lbs. They have tons of personality and a sence of humor. Leah is a smart puppy, very quick learner! Generally just wants to please, and she's always very happy! I'm not seeing ANY border collie traits in her, she's all Kelpie. My other dog, Gypsy, is aussie and border collie, an awesome dog, but way too serious at times. Yesterday, I was getting ready to go somewhere and the dogs followed me to the door because they knew they were going with me. When I got to the door, I remembered that I had left the leashes in the kitchen. So I told them "hold on, I gotta go get your leashes". As soon as I said that, Leah walked right into the kitchen and picked up her leash.

Dawn, you're right! A very smart pup indeed! Is your other dog more Aussie or more BC?

Gypsy's kinda both. I thought she was purebred aussie, until she grew up and never looked like anything but a border collie, so I thought of her as an aussie. Now I see the border, she's neurotic, and serious like a BC (not saying all BC's are neurotic, just can be more so than other breeds). The seriousness is her most border-like trait. But she's not as intense, and she has an off switch. She's extremely smart also, and you can practically have a conversation with her, with both parties understanding eachother completely.

Smart dogs are the best, until you learn that they can spell L-E-A-S-H

I adore SMART dogs! My Amber is a Dobie-Shepherd and is one of the most perfect balances between the two breeds. She has all of the good traits of both breeds and none of the bad - except one, a horrible case of hip displasia due to very lax hip joints.
Amber is alert, inquisitive, friendly, protective when she thinks it is necessary, gentle, loving, and talkative (this last is very much a dobie trait). She reasons - she really does. Works things out and makes an appropriate response. She can spell as well, several words, including walk, out, go, now and no. Granted, when I spell "N-O" it is usually with great emphasis, but the others are said completely conversationally. She learned that perambulation meant walk after we stopped using or spelling walk See what I mean?

Does your girl have the intense BC stare? I have watched (on tv only, alas!) borders work sheep and seen the "stare" used with great effect. Supposedly, Aussies have a much less severe "eye" and a more relaxed drive, though even some Aussies have an almost Border drive to them. Does Gypsy have a thinner, more refined Border muzzle, rather than the more rounded, blunter Aussie muzzle? I don't know how I missed seeing your answer....but at last here I am with mine!

Understand what you mean by neurotic, at least I think I do. To my way of thinking, this is a focus thing. Borders are all about work - they are happiest when working (at something). Aussies seem to be more relaxed though they need a job just as much as a Border does. They like to be busy but they want their "work" to be fun. Does that sound like what you were trying to convey with neurotic ?

Dawn,
Do all kelpies have the face mask? Or is this a puppy marking that will disappear? Or is Leah just unique in this? I adore masks on dogs (especially with "eyebrows". My Dobie-Shepherd has a mask and eyebrows and it makes her face just so expressive - tons of expressions always.

All of the kelpies I've seen in person were marked like a dobie. Leah has a little white that you usually wouldn't see much of on a Kelpie. While doing internet research, I've found that they can be anywhere from tan (fawn?) to jet black. Lots of diversity in colors!

I went to a stock dog show once (long before I got Leah), just dogs herding cows. They had border collies and Kelpies, the Kelpies were smaller and more agile. Seemed to respond a little better to their handlers also.

If you have a chance to see stock dogs working like that, take it, it's fun to see them do what they were bred to do!

I've seen lots of Episodes of the BBC/America herding trialing show - A Man and His Dog I think it's called. They are all Borders though. Fascinating to watch, for certain, but I think I would enjoy watching a variety of dogs (Aussies, Kelpies, Corgis, English Sheepdogs, etc.) working stock as well. Evidentally it isn't on any more (this was back about three years ago!)

Dawn, do Leah and Gypsy interact well together? Does Gypsy get into playing with Leah? Who initiates the play? Does Leah's happy nature rub off somewhat on Gypsy?

Just wondering...you have quite a duo there! As far as I have been able to tell, herding dogs are loaded with intelligence.
