Ears and grooming

Yorkiemom Aug 10, 2003 01:38 PM

Hi, I have a couple of questions that have cropped up since talking with other Yorkie Moms. My Joe is nearly eight months old now, and he has been quite a teether, that has lessened. My questions are 1) Is it true that when they are teething that their ears do not come up? His have not, the other thing is if I tape them can they still come up? 2) My other question is in r/e of ear hair plucking/pulling? I've never heard of this. My first Yorkie had very little hair in his ears, but Joe certainly has alot. If this is something that needs to be done how does one do it? Amazing what I don't know, but want to learn. Yorkiemom

Ears
Check the ears daily for any problems. Cotton swabs work great dipped in Olive Oil, or you can use paper towels. DO NOT dig down into the Yorkies ear, as this may cause damage because their ears are very sensitive. Twirl the cotton swab instead of rubbing inside the ear. To trim the hair inside the ears you may use Eye Brow tweezers but they are very sharp, and care must be taken when pulling out any hair that is inside the ear canal. You might want to ask your Vet to help you with this. Only the outsides of the Yorkies ears are trimmed with scissors.

Yes, teething can cause the ears to go up and down.

As to plucking... I do pull the hair out of the ear canal to keep the ears dry and clean... most of us show people breeders do this (in fact ALL that I know do)
