Diet problems ...

blackpaw Aug 11, 2003 10:19 PM

Hi all,

I have two gorgeous Cavie's - Black & Tan and a Blenheim (Bobbie & Beanie).

Unfortunately Bobbie is a bit to endearing and his weight has ballooned to 15.5 kilos (he should be 12), also he is 6 years old.

We've cut his diet to:
Breakfast - 1/4 cup dry biscuits
Dinner - 1/2 Cup Cooked Mince, rice & Vegetables
Every two days he gets a small meaty raw bone to chew (they have *excellent* teeth)
Daily suppliments for his joints (Walthams & Glucsomine)

I'm taking him for a gentle 3Km mixed walk/jog every morning, which he seems to cope with ok, though not particularly like <g>

The complication is that he only has one hip joint, the righthand one having been removed for treatment of hip dysplasia (that may have been an excessive treatment done by a over enthusiatic vet - more later) and I'm worried that I'm overstressing him, but he is an expert at pyshcing us out <G> - this is partly how he got so fat in the first place ...

Does anyone have an other suggestions ? this excess weight is slowing him done and harming his health.

GORGEOUS! Did the vet recomend this diet switch? You could just try feeding him LESS food, or switching to a less fatty food, for overweight dogs. He doesn't look too bad from this pic tho. Good luck, and keep me updated!

Thanks <g>
Since posting I've changed the diet, cutting out the rice. Now its:

Breakfast:
1/8 Cup Dry biscuits

Dinner:
100gram raw mince
1/4 cup chopped raw vegetables

The diet was devised from the BARF diet, but the vet approves. Actually we are getting good results in the first three weeks - he's definatly a bit more "waisted" and perkyer

Hi,

I'm afraid I don't have any real suggestions. I only feed kibble and my girls get 3 cups a day. (Greyhounds)

I did want to say your dogs are gorgeous!!!
