Why Wont Dakota...

Laila Aug 13, 2003 02:37 PM

I recently got a GSD puppy named Dakota who is 1year old and a wonderful dog.We have a mini agility field in our backyard and Dakota wont go up th A-frame.The part I find strange is that she does the teeter just fine.I have tried putting a blanket over the A-frame to make it look like a solid object. It doest shake or feel unstable. We have tried caoxing her up with treats and she just sits at the bottom and begs for it.We have tried to lead her up and it just doesnt work.

Have you tried lowering the A-frame?

And have you gotten the hips x-rayed on your GSD? I know GSD's are prone to hip displaysia and if Dakota has it, it may be painful to do the Aframe. You cannot tell just by looking at your dog.

The A-frame is as low as it goes with out taking it apart. No we havent gotten her hips Xrayed but now that you mentjion it we will set up the earliest appoibntment possible to find out.I dont think it is that because she will do the dog walk just fine.We will still have the xrays done.Well Ill post you back and tell you how she is doing.

Speaking from experience. . .let the "A-Frame" go for now. Just ignore the whole thing for now and act like it doesn't even exist. The reason I'm saying this is because my dog Carson had a horrible experience with the dog-walk. He fell off it and would not even go near it! So, I would have him concentrate on the other obsticles and I made the whole experience of agility fun. Now, I can honestly say that the dog-walk is his favorite thing to do! How I finally coaxed him onto it was "treats, treats, treats!" If he even turned his head in the direction of the dog-walk I gave him a treat, if he put one paw on the dog-wald, I gave him a treat. . .you get the point. Try not to focus on the A-frame for now, your GSD will figure it out if you make it fun. Good luck!

Hi and Welcome! There are so much information and tips regarding agility. The best one is having fun with your dog and trying not to get stressed or stress out your dog. For now I recommend ignoring the A-Frame. Make the other obsticles fun and exciting. Another idea is have you yourself tried crawling up and over it while its low and then once you are over it get really excited and show your pup how much fun you had. Sounds crazy, but it helped my dog! LOL! Good luck and please let us know how things go.
