Very good question! On fielddog.com there is a wealth of information about training.
Suzanne Clothier, an excellent dog trainer has a list of interesting books on her website http://www.flyingdogpress.com/catalog.html that include basic training tips that are essential as the foundation of all other training. (for instance, solid recalls, sit, stay, down, etc.)
