Urgent??

SunnyMN Aug 28, 2003 06:10 PM

Hey all, I'm new here and I have a question. My 9 year old cocker had a seizure last week (not uncommon for him, he seizes every so often), and since that time, his left eye has been watering. I didn't think a lot of it, since he seemed to be having no other problems, I just figured something had blown in it while he was outside. I looked at it, but couldn't see anything in it.

I did notice that when he panted, though, the right side of his mouth seemed to pull further back than the left, but I didn't think it was anything to worry about at the time.

Today, though, his eye is still watering, and I noticed that when he sleeps, the left eye doesn't fully close. I tried brushing my fingernail acorss the eyelashes on that side, and noticed he doesn't seem to have a blinking reflex present. The right eye reacts normally, and the third eyelid of the left eye also reacts, albeit somewhat sluggishly.

The vet's office is closed for today, and I'm wondering just how urgent this is. It took me a week to notice the problem, so would waiting until morning be all right, or does this need to be addressed now? Is this something I should make an emergency call for?

I am concerned about eye damage due to his not fully closing that eye.

Thanks in advance...I'm thinking I may just call the vet right now and ask him what he thinks, though I'd still like to read any comments from you guys about whether you've dealt with something like this, what I can do at home to help him, etc.

I didn't see your message until now--the difficulty of message boards, too slow for emergencies. I hope you've taken the dog to the vet by now, and hope things will go well. Cockers have a lot of eye problems, and it may be unrelated to the seizure.
