Yorkie pups with white on chest!!! Can it be???

barker109 Sep 03, 2003 09:01 PM

I have a dilema I need some help with. I had my yorkie bred to a registered male. She delivered later than I expected. I noticed that 2 of the pups have white on their chest. Not a massive amount but very obvious. Now the problem is that we also have a Jack Russell male and I'm afraid he may have bred her. Has anyone had yorkie pups with white on their chest? I called our local University Vet Clinic but the geneticist is on vacation. Any response would be appreciated.
Take care,
Karen

If you're worried, I'd spend the money to have the pups, the mom, and both possible parents DNA tested. . it's expensive, but it's better than AKC fining you if they get a complaint and do the DNA themselves. $40 a dog, you use a cheek swap

I've just found out some information from the Yorkie group on Belg-L. They told me that white on the chest means the pups will have a nice silky coat. They explained it was very common and they see it all the time. A little white on the feet means the same thing. None the less, if I see any other sign I will definitely do the DNA testing.
Thanks for the feedback.

Karen

ACTUALLY, white on the chest means they will GROW coat, not that it will be silky. I've had MANY pups born with white on chests, toes, even chins. It never really goes away, but it does blend into the gold as they grow older.

There are many old wives tales about how to tell if a pup will have a silk coat. The BEST way I know is if at the age of 8 to 12 weeks they look fuzzy and have Lots of coat, they won't have a silk coat. Silk coated puppies like really scruffy compaired to their cottony/wool coated brothers or sisters, and they take up to 2 years to come into coat. This is why I don't show yorkie puppies. I would rather wait until they are in coat when they have a chance of doing more than making points for someone else's adults.
