training my chessy for the hunt

AbsoluteRae Sep 03, 2003 10:41 PM

So, I've decided to take up hunting the winged variety (I've been target shooting for years and I'm getting bored of it) and I figure as long as I have a remarkably intelligent dog, I might as well put him to use. My Chesapeake Bay Retreiver is 21 months old and my dad (who used to show obedience) has him trained on basic commands. I've got a ton of books, but I was wondering if y'all had any tips for me, seeing as my father never hunted. Thanks for any advice!

Good question! Even though I had a Lab and live on the Chesapeake Bay itself, I'm hardly a hunter. BUT there are websites that give information about training dogs to retrieve, etc. And, of course, books. I seem to remember my friend who had Chessies taught them to carry eggs in their mouths to test the "softness" of their mouths. This was just a stage in his training (and he started when they were pups).
