New Pit pup and my other dogs-Please help.

theloon13 Sep 12, 2003 06:02 PM

Hi all I'm new here my name is Chris.
I own 2 dachsunds one is 9 months the other is a year old.
Yesterday I was given a 6 week old Pit Pup by a friend. Shes beautiful and very healthy. We just moved into a new apartment 4 houses away from the beach here in New Jersey so we decided to name her "Jersey". We have so much room to play w/ them and walk them especially having the beach right here. My question is: being that shes only 6 weeks old, will she get along well w/ my dachsunds as they all grow up? Theyre all getting along fine right now and they really seem to like each others company but I'm nervous I may have problems in the future. I want to raise Jersey to be a fun loving dog and we are doing our best to really socialize her w/ many people and other dogs. Any suggestions would really help, I hope I'm doing the right thing.
thanks!

Well, in addition to many bully breeds being "other dog" aggressive, the worst seems to be same-sex aggression. So, be careful and watch for that. And, aggression may not show up until hormones start kicking in - around six months maybe? So, you have some time to socialize and train. I am also worried about when your pit girl gets some growth and towers over the dschies - will she play too rough with them? And I would make certain that you have all the basic obedience commands down with her, plus get her used to a crate, so if you have to separate the dogs, she will be okay with that.

What Tasha said was right on. But I will add to her comments. Yes, I don't come here like I should but when I do I give my experience with the matter as the best I can..

Ok, let's begin. Yes, it is possible to have the dogs together until maturity but I always will say keep an eye. I don't think it was the best choice to take on this type of dog if you on't have "advanced" knowledge but it's too late for that. How to help?
I suggest to keep your dog as much as possible with the dogs it is to be living with. Next, socialize it as much as possible with other dogs up until 6 months. After that walk near, talk to others with dogs, but never get close. HEAR ME OUT. I am speaking from someone who specializes in this breed. I know much infomation about many others including how to police dog train, military train, plant train, and your beg./ /intermediate/and adv. training. But I know most of all that a dogs genetics will always put exceptions to the rule. A border collie no matter how much training will try to herd something whether it be ducks, etc or even kids. They will do it. A bloodhound loves to be on a trail. If let off w/out a leash it will run the train until heart failure. Some will say it can never happen but I have worked dogs and have seen these actions what I say in real life. Yes, bloodhounds will run a train to death, those that have been bred to do so. Now we are on your dog. How do you know if your dog is "truly" an american pit bull terrier? If I take a poodle and breed it to a pit then it'll be 1/2 pit. Then if I cross it with a "Well, in addition to many bully breeds being "other dog" aggressive, the worst seems to be same-sex aggression. So, be careful and watch for that. If I breed it one more time then I have a passable"pit" bull.
So you have to kow what you have. Tasha can give details on the breed as she knows. But if she needs extra help I am here and have police, military, and industrial plant trained dogs. I know how to work them in a positive manner as well as know what to expect for a hard driven dog......Ask more q's so we can beter help you...

Thanks

Yay, Snakey - you're back!! Glad to see you. I'm rock solid on dogs and I know some about APBTs since I have been around a number of them, but there are serious gaps in my knowledge. I'd be the first to admit that.
