Do you "Line Breed"?

pugaboo1 Sep 14, 2003 01:50 PM

What's everyone's thoughts on line breeding. I'm familiar with it and going to be doing a close line breeding. I've been studying this peticular pedigree. The Sire's parents are 1/2 siblings and are the same as the Dam's Grandparents on the Dam's Mother's side only. The Dam's father's side is a complete outcross. Hope that makes sense. I believe this makes them 1/2 uncle niece breeding. Is that correct? It can get a bit confusing when you stare at the pedigree for so long! LOL!

My goal, and trust me I don't take breeding lightly..is to go back into the line and bring out those qualities. The bitch I'm going to breed is a finished champion. I show my dogs.

I would love to hear anyone's experiences, thoughts, etc. on line breeding. Hopefully no flaming as I'm not looking for that. But would just like to hear if you've found more consistancy in the puppies, did it pull the traits you were hoping it would (I know it can also pull the negative as well...I understand the whole double up on genes, etc).

Thanks so much!

I think that the advisability of this practice really varies from breed to breed. In some breeds, there's such a small gene pool that it's almost laughable to talk of an outcross at all - and even in breeds with a large gene pool, type can be so critical in limiting breeding decisions, that you can have almost the same situation.

You've already covered the real concern, which is doubling up on undesireable traits. The rest, IMO, is a matter of art.
