JRT unvaccinated at 1 1/2 years of age

irelynne Sep 28, 2003 09:22 AM

Dear Friends,
I would appreciate your suggestions regarding getting my wild JRT vaccinated. A female obtained at 2 months of age, it was then relayed by the previous owner the little female dog and her sister, whom I also have, have had no vaccinations. The one of the pair I'm writing about would bite the heck out of me if I tried to pick her up for any reason, including transport to the doc's office for shots. She's been of this temperment all the time I've had (and royally spoiled) her. If I sit or lie on the floor, she likes having her back and belly scratched very much, but becomes frantic if more is attempted. To combat fleas, I must chase her into a corner and pour flea dip concoction onto her from a gallon milk jug! There's much growling and showing of big, scary teeth during these "treatment showers." I've thought of asking the vet for an oral tranquilizer so I can handle her long enough to get her to his office. The sister is gentle and trusting of me, completely opposite. They are inside dogs, so I guess their immunity has not been overly challenged, as they've never been ill. I'm ashamed to not have been able to outsmart my little JRT to have gotten her basic medical services. So here I post, defeated. Please, any suggestions welcome. Thanks, irelynne

Talk to your veterinarian about this. It won't be the first time they've had to decide how to handle care of an animal that may be aggressive with normal examination. They'll have some sort of plan, or refer you to someone who does.

Dear KDD,
Thanks very, very much. I didn't know vets could help with a dog that refused to show up for treatment. The previous owner has just stared at me when I asked if any other pups from her JRT litters behaved like mine, implying they're all docile as bunnies. Will visit your site, thanks for including address. And will report outcome of vet's response to dilemma.
May Autumn 2003 be one long frolick for you and your own critters,
Irelynne

Sure, the breeder is staring at you as if you are insane. Dosent sound like she'd like to admit she sold you a hyper dominant spastic dog.

Get a seditive. Put it in her food, sedate her, take her to the vet and get in cntact with a traner and get this problem fixed. Stop spoiling her, take charge, yoke her up and remind her that you are head bitch in this home, thank you very much and she can just back off you.

Its hard when they are cute, but she sounds almost unmanagable, and if something serious ever happened to her how'd yu get your hands on her? How'd you medicate her and stuff?
