Feces Question?

LeoGeoKing Oct 08, 2003 10:57 PM

Today when I was making my rounds "cleaning out the Leo's cages" I picked up one of my female Albinos and she defecated on me. I got a bit worried because half was normal and the other half was obviously non digested Mealworms. The undigested part had little clear strings running through it and I was scared it was a type of internal parasite.she has always given solid feces and has not lost any weight recently.IS there a chance she has internal parasites or am I just overreacting?

My leo pooped on the vet, and it was also runny. I think it's because he was just trying to poop what he could, and the incomplete digested stuff was all he had available. I'm not sure about the clear things you mentioned. Healthy leos can carry parasites without having any problems, so you might not have to worry if she's never exhibited any symptoms and this is just a one time deal. Still, a fecal wouldn't hurt if you haven't done one in awhile, and it will put your mind at ease.

Thanks for the wise words. I had a fecal done when I received the Leo's 4 months ago and they were all clean. I am a very strict neat freak also so my Leos cages stay extra clean. I have heard that they can get parasites from Mealworms and Crix but mine are ordered from timberline and I have never heard of any problems with their product.

By the way what kinda dog is that? It kinda looks like a bat.LOL

I've read on a health site that pinworms in mice can end up in the leo's poop, but it would just pass through the bodies of the leos without affecting them because they are mice pinworms. I'm still trying to confirm this and whether or not the same applies to crickets that carry pinworms. Pinworms aren't usually a problem though. One of my leos, who's perfectly healthy and looks great, was just recently confirmed to have pinworms. I'm still going to treat her for it.

What you want to watch out for are the breeders that use recycled egg cartons for shipping their feeder insects. Coccidia is fairly common in chickens. Some of the oocysts end up on the chicken eggs when they're sat upon by the hens. Supposedly, reused egg cartons can retain shell fragments from the chicken eggs, which the crickets then eat, therefore, ingesting the coccidia and passing it onto your leo. Crypto is one type of coccidia you do not want to deal with, namely because there is no cure and you can only watch your leo deteriorate. Some people have posted on here about having a mysterious illness affect their colony, and I know one person could only trace it down to the crickets he bought from Flukers.

I'm not sure what she is. I think she might be a sharpei-boxer mix, but other people have their own guesses. She's much cuter in person.

I've heard people say to do fecals at least once or twice a year. In the picture you posted awhile back, it looked like Melvin was a healthy weight. If he's pooping and acting healthy, I wouldn't worry about getting a fecal done unless you want to be absolutely sure.

hi!

thanks for the info on fecals & parasites. yup, melvin is doing pretty well - he's more active and LOVES to "hunt" the mealworms (still with a fat taiL & same solid feces). also, your dog is still cute i LOVE the face she makes with her arms all stretched out!!
