HOA President forgetting about Gentelman's Agreement about my Dog's

tazpooh Oct 04, 2003 10:53 AM

I'm a home owner in the Dallas Texas Uptown area. Before purchasing my Townhome/Loft, I spoke with my HOA president
about my two Rotties Tasha 4yr and Tazzie 1 yr. I wanted to
have a hearing with the HOA Group, but he assured me that
was not needed. He made a Executive decision and approved the Girl's and gave me a Gentelman's Agreement. He also stated he would inform all HOA member about his decision. Well one of the Home Owner that has only SEEN the dog feel they are Trained attack dogs and will attack on a moments notice. I can assure my girl are not train attack dog's they are being judge for there breed and not thier character. They have been through extensive obedience training with a Professional at Mans best Friend. I've
obtain letter of recommendation for the Vet, Pet Sitter, former Landlords, House Keeper, Trainer and my neighbors. If you can provide any suggestion, comments and any information about my rights to have at the HOA hearing .

Thanks

You didn't actually say that they are attempting to force you to get rid of your dogs. What I would suggest is taking your written referrals to a HOA meeting and presenting these to the board and members.

Maybe you could get your trainer to help you and do an obedience demonstration at the HOA meeting. Then they could verify to any concerned home owners that you have well trained and well behaved dogs.

Did you get a copy of the HOA rules when you decided to buy your home? What does it say about dogs? If there is no rules against them then check with your city's dog laws. If you are not breaking any laws by having the dogs, then as long as you keep the dogs inside with you and only let them out when you are with them, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

You can also ask for an appeal from the HOA.... all of these associations are different so it's hard to say what your legal rights are.

My heart ACHES for you, cause Responsible Rottweiler owners face this oh, to often!
First, when we moved into our neighborhood that had a HOA, we made SURE to check every rule and regulation and restriction about dogs! Since my rottweiler is a trained service dog, there is no way I would live ANYWHERE that he is not welcome! Once I made sure that there were no restrictions on TYPES of dogs or breeds I made SURE at the house closing that they KNEW what I was moving in with (BTW, I have lived here now 2 years and have had nothing but POSITIVE responses!)
Your DOING the right stuff!!!!! Getting the letter from Vets, from your trainer, etc. Do your girls have their CGC awards? (Canine Good Citizens Awards) these are a title that is handed out BY the AKC for ANY dog (regardless of breed) when the dog can demonstrate that it can be a good citizen and not the neighborhood nuisance! for more info on CGC go here >http://www.akc.org/love/cgc/index.cfm
is there any way you can BRING the girls to the meeting? Bring the trainers, and whomever you can in person, also make sure to bring WRITTEN documents about the rottweiler breed and the POSITIVE things it can do (make copies for everyone! LOL!) Mine is a registered Therapy Dog, Service dog, and does Carting and other activities. While letters are fantastic, bringing the actual TRAINER who can talk about the dogs while you DEMONSTRATE how they heel, sit, down, stay, etc is wonderful! Also talk about how your dogs are INSIDE dogs and not outside alone or unattended. Sounds like you have one or two people who are to much believing "media Hype" go out there and show them the TRUTH! Good luck and let us know how it goes!
Warmly,
AKC CGC
