Thinking of breeding a bichon frise and a maltese...

lgrimes Oct 07, 2003 04:10 PM

My friend and I were thinking about breeding our dogs together. He owns a male maltese and I own a female bichon frise. We'd like to know if these breeds mix well, what the puppies will be like, etc.

Any information would be extremely helpful.

TIA,
Lindsey

Whenever you mix breeds, the results are unpredictable. The temperaments of one or all of the puppies could be worse than the temperament of either parent, and the coats produced by that cross could be difficult to keep groomed. The dogs could also have unpredictable genetic health problems.

There are good reasons for pure breeding. Each of you would do well to go back to the breeder from whom you got your dog to talk about this, if it was a responsible breeder. If not, talk to the national breed club for each breed and to the rescue organization for each breed to learn more. You can get contact information for these folks at www.akc.org.

But then, in MY opinion, Responsible Breeders spay and neuter puppies that they don't keep in their own breeding program.

Responsible Breeders spay/neuter Pet puppies.
Statistically, the average breeder remains in a breed for five years. The mark you leave on that breed, good or bad, is entirely up to YOU!
