Mini Dachshund Coughing Weird

ssmower Oct 11, 2003 10:12 PM

I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with their pet. Here is what is happening. She is trying to catch her breath. But the same time blowing air out her mouth. Her stomach area is sucked in. She can hardly stand when having these attacks. She stops when her attention is drawn to something else. The Vet said it was a reverse cough. Is this true? Does anyone know? I need help. It scares me to see her have these fits. Thanks.

Hi!

I've heard of reverse sneezes...wonder if this is the same thing. If it is, it isn't anything to worry about. Get your dogs attention to stop it. How old is she? Has she always done this? Did the vet seem concerned?

Also, what is your dogs name? Tell us more about her.

The vet said it was a reverse sneeze. No, she wasn't cocerned, she just gave us some antihistamines to give to her. She just started doing it 4 weeks ago. Her name is Precious and she is 10 years old. She is a black long hair mini. She weighs 10lbs. I hope she will be ok. Thanks for your reply.

Has the antihistamines helped it get any better?

She does sound Precious!

Another thought is something going on with my 12 1/2 year old Greyhound. My vet said with age, the air passages begin to harden. Kira breaths really hard when we go for a walk. I wonder if it might not be similar.

I think if it doesn't get any better, I'd go back to the vet. If that vet can't tell you anything else, I'd ask to have another vet look at her.

Keep me posted please!

Hi. I have a two year old black and brown mini named Tucker. He has done this very same thing. I always attributed it to asthma. I first noticed him doing it after he smelled some kind of plant at the beach, and then later with exersion. I have to pet him and talk softly to him, and he then stops. It usually happens when my son and he are playing and he gets over excited. I know exactly how you feel, it freaks me out. It must be something that this breed exhibits. Do the antihistamines help at all? Is there anything your dog does right before?
