Puppy jumping...

herperjames Oct 26, 2003 06:27 PM

When I get my new puppy (a mutt, my favourite) I want to teach it lot's of cool tricks. Is it possible to teach a puppy that's not a special breed to jump up and over things? How would I go about doing this?
Thanks

Hi! First, it is great that you are going to teach your pup new tricks. Best way is the positive way. Lots of praise and treats, I do not correct for wrong things, just give treats and praise for the right things. As far as jumping goes, its highly recommend that you do not let a dog jump over, onto or out of something high until they are at least 16 to 18 months old. Reason is because even though they "look" mature and full grown, the are not. It takes bones and muscle much longer to mature. However, you can lay pvc pipe on the ground and have your pup walk over it. A ladder laying flat and having your pup walk through the steps is great also.

Good luck and could you post a pic of your pup? I'm sure this pic of a snake is great but, is it possible to train one!? LOL!
