It just so happens we've also been shopping for an infrared thermometer.
We've been browsing on eBay for one. This model is inexpensive and apparently is pretty acurate:

When it comes to measuring temps and humidity, we have discovered this really great indoor/outdoor thermometer with humidity gauge at Walmart for just $15. They are, in our opinion, absolutely perfect for terrariums as they are weather-resistant and the probe can be either burried in substrate, stuck-on (has an adhesive) or attached with a screw (has an eyelet). They also record min/max temps *and* min/max humidity, plus it comes with optional clock display (you know, in case your lizard might like to know what time it is... LOL).
