Thoughts on the "American Mastiff"

wolfstar74 Nov 03, 2003 04:41 AM

Hello to all of you on the board.

I am looking for input on the American Mastiff being produced by Flying W farms of Ohio.

Do any of you have any experiences with this breed?

I really like the Mastiff breeds but the wife says no "slobbery dogs." The creators of this breed are claiming a "dry mouth" from the cross with the Anatolian Shepherd. As well as less hip problems and longer life spans.

I am now trying to do some research before I venture into what appears to be a new breed.

Thanks for any and all of your help.

Hi! Welcome to the "Mastiff Family". We are small in numbers right now but the more of us that hang out here the more that will follow.

I know nothing about the "American Mastiff". It sounds to me like one of those mixes I don't think I would want to take a chance on until there are plenty of sources and documentation from previous owners. But that's just me.

Regarding drool, LOL. Large dogs drool!! Mastiffs really drool!! I would suggest that you get the wife to go to a couple of dog shows with you and meet a few nice Mastiffs. The drool is actually minimal...... well mine is anyway. She really only drools after eating, drinking and playing. It's manageble, just need to keep a little hand towel handy so you can just give it a swipe.

Please keep us posted on what you find on these dogs. I just don't know how with a new breed they can advertise less hip problems and less drool...... shepards often have genetic hip problems. I don't know that they have been around long enough to have ample dogs to draw from.

I have an American Mastiff From Flying W. She is a great companion. She is also very sweet and gentle. I can’t say enough about her. As far as slobber goes, as long as she isn’t excited or eating or drinking slobber isn’t an issue. I would say I have more of an issue with the hair. I agree, all large dogs slobber.
