Uterine Inertia with previous litter...can they whelp natural second time?

pugaboo1 Nov 11, 2003 10:05 PM

I have a bitch that had uterine inertia with her last litter and ended up needing a c-section after attempts with oxytocin failed to produce adequate contractions.

Has anyone had a bitch that had this problem go on to whelp subsequent litters naturally?

If you've had this problem, how did you handle a subsequent litter. Did you automatically opt for a planned c-section or did you let her try natural with the Vets on call in case she ran into the same problem?

I'm debating on the best way to go here. Would like to let her try natural if possible just because I know c-sections can be hard on them and produce scar tissue. But am fearful that I'm not going to make the right decision and don't want to put her or the puppies in any danger.

You don't mention what breed you have. Some breeds are prone to this problem and will or should have a Csect. I have one bitch that had a Csect (not for inertia) and on her next litter over a year later she had a natural birth. Sone things that will cause this problem is large puppies, large litters, small or singleton litters. Again some breeds have different problems...Standard Poodles will have this problem with small litters, Corgis have it with large litters or pups (had a Csect litter of Corgis). Contact other breeders of your breed and find out what their experiences are.
