Oh, Welcome to "THE PUPPY STAGE!" Been there, done that!
And thank goodness it's over!
I have an 11 month BC and we put her in her crate with a toy and soaked a towel in "ALITTLE" chicken broth and froze it and gave that to in her crate. We also used a konk with broken up treats with peanut butter. You could try a ticking clock (outside the crate so she don't chew it) or a warm watter bottle under a blanket.
The key is to play with her and poop her out before bed time so she goes down easier.
We actually had to put her (in her crate) in our basement due to her crying and howling all night.
I felt horrible doing that but after 2 weeks with absolutley no sleep I was not helping her get through her problem because I was too tired and agitaded.
I hope this helps and good luck with your new addition!
Let us know how she does!
Ok, I understand and agree with giving a Kong and a water bottle, however, I'm baffled with the towel soaked in chicken broth frozen then given to your dog? I have a BC and would be afraid that she would chew the towel and injest it
thanks for the info though.

I know it sounds funny with the towel but, this is what my BC's trainer sugested to try.
It worked for her and she never chewed up the towel.
I guess every dog is different, she never chewed anything.
I was lucky for that!
Hope your little ones doing better!
well the night I posted that I thought he would be fine but turns out I was wronge! Well I think that the only problem is that he has to go to the wash room wich wakes him up, and since he has alwas had 10 puppys around him, and he gets frightend. HE si fine in the day not a word out of him, just at night he winnes
Hi!
I don't know anything about Border Collies, but the problem I see here is that the puppy has been taken away from its mother and siblings 2 to 6 weeks too soon. Is there anyway it can go back to the mother for a few more weeks? This is an important part of socialization for your puppy and this is the time it learns alot from the mother and other puppies.
A puppy should never be taken away from its mother before 8 weeks, and 12 weeks is even better. You may find you will have behavior problems that could be difficult to correct. Biting, aggression, fearful behavior could all be potential problems.
I do wish you luck and hope you don't have any of these problems.

Welcome! How old is your puppy? Do you have a crate or an x-pen that you can lock your puppy in? Try getting your puppy tired before bedtime like playing ball or a nice walk. Put a piece of your clothing in the puppies sleeping quarters this will help comfort your puppy. If you have made your puppy comfortable and have told puppy its time for bed "try" to ignore the whining. I understand this will be very hard but it sounds like a pattern has been established that whenever puppy whines puppy gets attention.

While it is true that your pup was taken from his mother too early (NOT your fault) this is not uncommon behavior. All of the other suggestions are good for comforting your pup and keeping him occupied while he's in the crate at night. Maybe he should go into the crate at intervals during the day when people are around so that he can learn that the crate is a good, safe place and it is his. One other suggestion, esp. if you have a wire crate, try covering it with an old blanket. If the crate is dark and warm it is more like a den and therefore might make him feel safer and not quite so alone- which is the biggest problem. Remember that dogs are pack animals and are very social within that pack. Also, your pup was surrounded by other pups and his mother for the 1st 6 wks. of his life and doesn't understand why he is suddenly alone so he is a bit frightened, too. Very best wishes! Nancy
