Great Dane? Not sure what our new puppy is...

LauraR Dec 01, 2003 03:31 PM

Hi all, I'm new here... Oct 25 we adopted a 10wk old pup from a local Humane Society. He is just the most gorgeous blue merle mantle? (not too familiar w/terminology). When we adopted "Apache" they said he was an Austrailian Shepherd pup/mix. As he's gotten older, we've had many comments on what a beautiful Great Dane we have. ??? Of course, I know he's much larger than an Aussie, but never having owned a Dane nor seen a Dane pup, I have no clue! Why is this important to us? Obviously, because of their large stature, and health problems I would like to make sure that we feed him appropriately. I am going to try and post a pic here of Patch for you all to look at. Currently, at 15wks (approx) he is getting 4 1/2 cups of Iams large breed puppy. Any guesses or suggestion are obviously welcome! Not the best pic.. everyone who saw him yesterday when we went to Petsmart said, "my he's stacked". Gads...

What a cute picture! Its so hard to tell at such a young age. However, in this pic your puppy resembles a Border Collie. I could be wrong, but it sounds like you are feeding a lot of food! Its recommended that you feed 2 to 3 meals a day. Just keep an eye on his weight. Write back and tell us more!

HI Charstuff...
Patch is getting 2 meals a day at 2 1/4 cups (per the vet recommendation).. I thought that was alot of food, but he said because of his "large" build, and the question of his breed he wanted us to make sure... he is always hungry.. no worms, excellent vet care.. but man does he eat! I meant to add he's 30 lbs at 15wks.. his legs are different than what i"m use to w/dobe's etc. very square.. and very thick... I had a border collie pup on a foster care stay w/us once and I know that he's much different.. I wish I had a better pic of him to show ya.. he was found wandering on the road at 10weeks old. poor baby...

I don't know what he is, but he sure is pretty! I hope you stick around and share photos as he gets older so we can see how he does. I also love to hear stories about growing up.

Have fun with him and thank you for taking him!!!
