READ this one: OVERBITE and breeder didnt tell me - new puppy

jamierenae Dec 26, 2003 04:51 PM

Well, I had just brought home our new puppy two days ago. I paid 600.00 to what i thought was a reputable breeder. Well, today I had my first vet visit with him and the vet told as he has a bad overbite. After looking at his health certificate again I did notice it that it was on there when i signed it after recieving him from the breeder. I guess it was my fault that i trusted her enough after she explained to me he had his first shot and was dewormed, I didnt read the little notice from her vet about the overbite. I of course don't wanna return the puppy because in these two days we already are so attached to it. But what I am starting to wonder isnt that something the breeder should have pointed out to me? I mean if I wanted "just a lab" i coulda gotten one from the local paper for 250.00 $. I was willing to pay more money because i figured from a good breeder I couldnt go wrong. Am I wrong for thinking she should have told me about this? Did i pay too much now? I am so upset.

Is it true as my vet stated that an overbite is just a cosmetic thing?
Won't it harm him in any way ever?
Thanks for any input.
Manuela

Congrats on your new puppy! Very exciting! How old is your puppy? If your vets comment upsets you or you have questions, get another opinion. I would also contact the breeder and discuss this. Most breeders want to hear about their puppies. In fact, one of the breeders we got one of our Chesapeaks from actually came to the vets office with me for a second opinion and she promised to make things right. There ended up being nothing wrong at all and my breeder was thankful I brought up the situation

well i told my breeder and she was more than "fresh" about it, she told me bring the puppy back today only for an exchange!
How in the world do you take a puppy from a 6yrs old away after 2 days! She offered no partial money back no appology nothing.
Wish there was a website where i could list my exprience with a bad breeder with her name.

The relationship between a breeder and a person who has one of her puppies/dogs can be complicated. It sounds like you and this woman may have a personality conflict. A conformation defect such as a flaw in dentition is not an issue for a companion dog. If you bought the dog with the understanding it was for show and breeding, then it's an issue, because dentition is genetic and would likely be passed down in the dog's bloodline. $600 is not an excessive price for a well-bred companion puppy, though, and dentition is not an issue. A breeder tries not to place a show puppy in a pet home, because then the dog's breeding genetics would be wasted.

If you can't get along with this breeder, perhaps you should take her up on her offer. There will be tons of dogs available now, from people who bought Christmas puppies without doing their homework. Kids adjust quickly. A pup you've had for 2 days is still a novelty to the child, not a true bond.
