MY JEALOUS BEAGLE ATTACKS MY OTHER DOGS VICIOUSLY

cleograndprairie Jan 04, 2004 08:48 PM

Ive had my beagle for 4 years and she is very loving. She was the second dog in my home to my now 15 year old shiitzu terrior mix. Both females both spayed. I noticed that my beagle was trying to be the aggressor to my older dog after about a year. My Beagle is very needy and hates any attention given to my other dog. She will try to push her away or she will whine and howl if you pet any other dog but her.

Of course she is very aggressive around food and i know beagles do that. But the aggression she can have over attention is just as vicious.

I got another puppy 8 months ago, a teacup chihuahua, same thing happened, my beagle nearly mauled her over attention.

My beagle loves to play with my other two dogs and they play all the time. But when it comes to attention every few months she will just snap and today was the worst.

My old dog is 15 and not an attention hound. A friend's teenage son was here playing with my beagle, and my older dog walked by them, my beagle snapped and severly attacked my older dog, it was so bad i had to take my legs and shoes to the beagle to get her off my other dog, my old girl ran off and then my beagle ran after her an proceeded to attack her more!!

I can only assume my beagle was jealous that my old dog wanted the boy's attention and that made my beagle angry.

I freaked out and finally got my beagle to go into her crate. (She cowered all the way into it). I have only let her out of her crate to potty and back she goes.

My old girl is soo furry i dont know if she has alot of minor bites under the fur, thank goodness no serious blood. My beagle went for her face mostly.

98% of the time my beagle is the most loving dog. She is VERY VERY needy for attention (which she gets alot of,i mean alot of) but she is a bit too jealous in my opinion.

I thought that she may be trying to be the alpha female with the other dogs, however i am afraid she could really hurt my old dog and she has the size and power to kill my little 3.5 lb chihuahua. I just never know when she will snap again.

Should i give her up? Puppy prozac?Keep her outside? Crated?HELP MEEEEEE!! I love them all so much! I am very upset. Thanks for reading my epic and i do appreciate any advice.

You'll need to keep the Beagle completely separated from the other females. This kind of thing is common in homes with multiple female dogs. It doesn't mean a thing as far as your dog being a problem with humans. It's just nature taking its course when you put certain female dogs together and they're forced to try to work out a pack order. The solution is to take away the need for them to form a pack order, by separating them.

Your oldest dog may not have a whole lot more time, which would mean not having too long to live with separation between those two dogs. The Beagle has been with you longer than the puppy and would be harder to place in another good home. Unless you have a GOOD home for her, it would probably be easier to find a really good home for the puppy.

Chances are the Beagle would be okay with a male dog, so after your oldest dog is gone you could add a male. That way you could have two dogs without either of them having to totally submit to the other.

Thank you so much for your reply. I was afraid I would have to seperate them. My old girl doesn't have much time I know this for sure, she has been fading the last year or so. I know she will not be here long.

The problem is that I am soo attached to the baby chihuahua that I would just be devestated to let her go. She is my lap dog and she is with me everywhere i go.

Do you think I should put my Beagle outside in the yard and keep the other two inside? Except in bad weather of course and at night bring her in to sleep in her crate? I know she will howl and cry by the door when im home.

My beagle has always been a house dog.

And you are right about humans, she has never been aggressive in any way towards them. Just the other smaller dogs.

Sometimes I have to take her to her mom and dad beagle's house for "BEAGLE TIME". They wont let her dominate them, in fact she goes belly up with them. I let her stay for 2-3 days at a time. Then she's ok.

Thanks again.

Turning her into an outdoor dog would be unkind. Perhaps the owners of her parents could help you find her another home? Maybe they would even take her?

She was there first, and it would not be difficult to find a home for the puppy. But I know it's hard. Once you get into a situation like this, there is no easy way out. Just remember, this is NOT the Beagle's fault. She is only following her instincts.

Thanks for your reply. I think I will have to find the Beagle a new home, she has attacked both of my other dogs so it seems most sensible to keep 2 and get rid of one. Keeping the Beagle in the kennel all day is not good, or keeping any of them in their kennel all day (to keep them seperated) is not good. And its freezing outside so that's not an option. I just dont have any other way of seperating them without it being sort of a punishment. I tried seperate rooms but they cry and eat the door and carpet if we do that.

Its so sad cause she is good most of the time, i just never know when she will snap.

boo hoo

Hello
I just wanted to say that giving up the puppy would sound like the best thing. IVE heard of MANY storyies of larger stronger dogs killing smaller ones out of dominance. IF YOU DO get another dog PLEASE Get one that is ROUGHLY the size of your beagle so it wwould be able to hold its own. ALSO please get a male and NOT a female which is usually the best pair. (that is if you consider getting another dog)
