HELP!! will my old yorkie ever get used to..

BrookeB676 Jan 13, 2004 11:13 AM

We have a 9 month male yorkie that we have had since he was 7 weeks. He is the absolute best dog, very playful and loving. He weighs almost 9 pounds- so he is a bit on the larger side. We have been talking about getting him a "sister" that he can be with the times that we are not home. Yesterday we bought a small female yorkie only weighing about 3 pounds and she is already 6 months. He was fine when we first brought her home, but I feel like now he is acting a little weird. He loves playing with his toys, which he is still doing, but I think he is just ignoring her and acting like he doesnt want her around. She is very playful and adorable and we really dont want to get rid of her, but our first yorkie needs to come first because we want him to be just as happy as he was before. It has only been a day but we are starting to have second thoughts. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this sort of situation. Do you think that he will be happy again within a few days or want to be around her? HELP !!!

Thanks!

Yorkies can be very stubborn about this. If you ever want another dog while you have him, and you want this female, it will be worthwhile to wait him out. He won't accept another dog more easily, you can pretty much bet on that. And if you get rid of this one, he'll be even more stubborn next time, figuring that if he pitches enough of a fit you will give in and get rid of that dog, too.

Give it time. At 9 months he's still a baby too and eventually they will work it out. I've never had a problem with my crew adjusting to a new comer, and as I do rescue we often HAVE new comers in.

Be SURE that you get them spayed and neutered before any accidents happen. From the sounds if it she isn't going to be big enough to have babies and it would be a shame to have her get pregnant and then have proglems. Plus neutering him right away will have the benefit of helping to keep him from marking everything in your house.

Also, if you spay her before her first heat cycle she will have an amost zero chance of developing breast cancer. Tiny girls should not have puppies (IMHO) and the sooner she's spayed the sooner you won't have to worry about that.

Responsible Breeders spay/neuter Pet puppies.
Statistically, the average breeder remains in a breed for five years. The mark you leave on that breed, good or bad, is entirely up to YOU!

Congrats on your new addition! Don't give the current troubles a second thought - it can take a few weeks for your first Yorkie to adjust to the new arrival. Expect some rivalry but let them work it out (unless one seems to be really dominating the other). You have to remember that THEY will work out who is the "top" dog, and you must conform to their decision! LOL! Sex, age, and size do not dictate who will be the alfa dog. And once it is established, make sure to conform by greeting the top dog first, feeding the top dog first, etc. Good luck! They will likely turn out to be great companions but it will take some time.
