FLEAS! What best to do?

ourhannah Jan 17, 2004 10:26 AM

Hi !! Our sweet Hannah seems to have fleas. Itching so much, now us with flea bites also. SO... wondering what is the best to use initially... the gel you put down the dog's back, or the flea collar? I have heard alot about Advantage from the vet. Is it a lot better? Is it the gel you put at their neck? I really wanted to get something today if anyone can help. I guess it's also good to try the garlic in the food, and maybe brewer's yeast also? If I do use garlic, do I just mince a clove and add it right in? HELP ! Don't know where best to start.

Hi!

I use Frontline, it is alot like Advantage. It is in liquid form and you put in between the dogs shoulderblades. I wouldn't use a flea collar. Flea collars have pesticides on them and I wouldn't want what is basically poison on my dog.

Let us know how your doing!

Advantage is very safe and works very fast. It's highly effective, and is your best bet against fleas. If you also have to worry about ticks, try K9Advantix, which is Advantage plus permethrin to kill ticks. Frontline is a good product, too, but Advantage is less toxic than Frontline and is superior at flea control.

Thanks for your help ! I did get a Hartz brand gel that is for fleas and ticks, and applied last night. Will see how that goes. I thought it was better to try that yesterday rather than wait til the vet office was open tomorrow. Does anyone know about garlic, how to go about that? Just mince a clove? Thanks !!

No, no, no, do NOT use flea and tick products from Hartz! As soon as that stuff wears off, get the proper stuff from your veterinarian. The Hartz stuff is dangerous!

Garlic is toxic to dogs if you give too much, in the same way onions are. There is no evidence that it deters fleas, either.

Be careful!!!! People have killed their dogs with these homemade flea control ideas. We live in a time that Advantage and Frontline make it totally unnecessary for dogs to suffer with fleas or die from flea products. Be Careful! Too many dogs have died over this.
