Dachshund Hair Loss or Thinning

hshlevin Jan 20, 2004 10:20 AM

I have a 3 yr old, male, neutered, standard doxie.

His hair is thinning on ear lobes, and over top of nose. No sores are evident. His thyroid has been checked and is ok; similarly his complete blood count is also ok.

Any ideas on how to treat and get hair to restore ?

Be sure the thyroid testing was for these values:
Total T4
Free T4 by Equilibrium Dialysis
TSH

and was sent to one of the 6 laboratories approved by OFA, www.offa.org. Local laboratories get a lot of wrong results on thyroid testing, and as a result many dogs who need treatment don't get it. This sounds like hypothyroidism.

If that's not what it turns out to be, ask your veterinarian to refer you to a veterinary dermatology specialist.

My dog gets those spots. Vet stuff didn't work. I use tea tree oil now, with a q-tip. Anytime I see a dry/balding spot, I can cure it in a matter of days. And...it's good for you too... Best wishes, Sue
