Beagle disturbing neighbors during daytime

duomax Jan 22, 2004 10:01 PM

We have a 16 wk old male Beagle who is crate trained. During the night if we leave he starts baying and barking. He does not seem to start until awhile after we are gone (according to our unhappy neighbors). We live in an apartment and are not sure what to do to keep him quiet. We have invested in the Comfort Zone plug ins, tried putting his crate in the living room with the tv on, and have resorted to leaving his crate (and him) in the bedroom where he is used to being. Nothing is working? Is it even possible to break him of this? Thanks for any ideas!

This could be separation anxiety. Can you possibly get back to your apartment during the day to play with your Beagle? Or can you possibly have a friend or relative give your Beagle attention during the day? Does your Beagle have toys and chewies to keep busy with? Raw shank or joint bones are really good or you can get a "Kong" and fill it with peanut butter or melt cheese-fill it then freeze it and give to your Beagle. . .this would help keep it occupied for a while. Just some suggestions

Thanks for the great suggestions! We do have a kong that we fill with goodies before we leave and he has a TON of squeaky toys and chewy bones that we do leave with him. We just purcharsed a sonic collar that emits a sound to quiet him. We have heard they are very humane and do work? We'll see. THe longest he is ever alone is 2 hours. We live very close to our work so we are able to come home every 2 hours or so and play with him. We walk him atleast 2 times a day. We find that the only time he seems to be a problem is in the late afternoons when we are usually and home and end up leaving for an hour to grocery shop. =) We are hoping that time, patience, love, and hopefully this sonic collar help teach him that us leaving is not a bad thing. And if nothing ever works we will move into a house b/c we just love our pup to much to let him go!!!! Any other suggestions are welcome!!

I love to hear that people are willing to move to a house in order to have better facilities for their animals! That's what I did, and have never, ever regretted it.

Just an update. Our Beagle is doing better. Now he is 5 1/2 months old and learning to be independent! He has learned that when we leave we do come home. Although now we take him everywhere with us b/c we love him so much, so the neighbor problem no longer exists! I am so glad that there are message boards like this. It helped us get through a rough time with our precious little puppy!!!

Beagles were bred to be noisy, so the hunters can follow them by sound. They do often lose their homes because of this, especially in apartments or in homes where people leave them out in the back yard. Your best bet is probably to work with a behavior specialist in your area. Ask your veterinarian to recommend someone.
