Standard Schnauzers in Schutzhund?

bullygrrl Jan 26, 2004 04:13 AM

i know this forum isn't used much, but heck, it's worth a try.

i'm looking for any info on "working" Standard Schnauzers. From all that i have read, they were the smallest breed worked as police dogs in Germany. So i can only imagine there are still some working today. i haven't found much on modern working dogs, so i'm trying every forum i can find.

Thanks for lookin!

I have seen some Giant Schnauzers work in ScH.
Covenant Working Giant Schnauzers

I don't think Standard Schnauzers are used in ScH much, if at all. Their size puts them at a significant disadvantage. Remember that SchH is a very serious dog sport and is not to be taken lightly.

Oh Lord, don't let me once forget how I love my trusty pet.
Help me learn to disregard canine craters in my yard.
Show me how to be a buddy even when my sofa's muddy.
Don't allow my pooch to munch postal carriers for lunch.
Shield my neighbor's cat from view--guide my steps around the doo.
Train me not to curse and scowl when it's puppy's night to howl.
Grant I shan't awake in fear with a cold nose in my ear.
Give me patience without end--help me be my dog's "best friend".

Oh...actually, it's not that serious. i've watched my friend train her AmStaff in French Ring (which is much, much, much harder than SchH), and i don't think any of those trainers have a serious bone in their bodies. Well, maybe Tommy, but he's got a very dry sense of humor.

i know some trainers in SchH take the sport way too seriously... in my opinion, if you and your dog aren't having fun, what's the point? If you take the sport too seriously, you can put an undue amount of stress on your dog as well.

There are currently NO 'standard' schnauzers in either SchH USA, or the SV in Germany, with a title. Plenty of Giants, but no standards. Schutzhund was never a sport to begin with. It WAS a serious competition. The Germans weren't into producing dogs for the sake of breeding. And to this day, you STILL cannot show a dog in Germany competitively without first attaining a working dog title. This was part of the reasoning behind a competition to gauge a dogs workability. Some of the contests that were taken out (which is part of what turned it from a serious competition into a sport) were the attack under gunfire and the article guard. I have been out of SchH for some years, but can't wait to have a "...serious SchH contender" challenge me on a working dog competition.

I don't think you understood me correctly. Yes, the people are wonderful, I know from experience. However, a dog trained in protection is like a loaded weapon and is not to be taken lightly! If you look at SchH and Ring sports as just fun and games you're likely to get yourself in a heap of trouble. These dogs are serious athletes and can do serious damage if not trained and handled properly.

I wasn't getting after you lesya, I was more annoyed with the direction that SchH has taken from it's initial days of inception. I liked it more when it was a little bit more of a serious 'working dog competition' than the sport it has become. I agree with you wholeheartedly about the seriousness of the dogs in the competitions, most police k-9's have a minimum SchHI title. And MOST are SchH III or IPO 3. Some have even come out of ringsport and or KNPV. I'm actually agreeing with you, while disagreeing with them.

I know you weren't trying to get after me! I was just a bit frustrated with "bullygrrl" for reacting as though SchH was something to sneeze at. I also think that she misunderstood me. I meant the seriousness of the liability of owning and training a dog in SchH not serious in a way of not having fun!

A loaded weapon? Are you serious? i hope not. As trainertom explained, Schutzhund was started as a way to access brood quality German Shepherds. If a schH dog was a "loaded gun", this wouldn't seem to be a very STABLE DOG. And an unstable dog doesn't seem like a trait you'd want to continue. Think of Schutzhund as a very complex temperament test. This is what it is SUPPOSED to be.

Have you ever BEEN to a Schutzhund training club? How many times have you watched training? i think you should do more research on the work/sport before you go around saying that SchH trained dogs are dangerous loaded weapons.

aysel Feb 02, 2004 08:34 PM

Yes, I do go to a SchH club. I think that owning a dog that is trained in protection work is a serious thing, and is not to be taken lightly. SchH is a high level of Obedience, but these dogs ARE trained to bite and you should not forget that. I think that it is irresponsible to take a certain nonchalant attitude towards SchH. Yes, a stable dog with good nerves is the root of a good SchH dog.

As I said, SchH dogs are serious athletes and can do serious damage if not trained and handled properly. I never mentioned them to be nervous or vicious animals.

They are a loaded weapon in the sense that they have the possibility to cause damage, again, if not handled properly.

geesh, it's exhausting having to explain and defend myself repeatedly.
