Ryan,

While I have only limited personal experience, only one day on you, I have done a lot of research on this breed. You need to let her bark away and NOT go let her out until she stops. You don't want her to associate barking/whining with getting out. I stayed stong on the first two days and now she barely whines at all.

And for the eating, mine didn't eat or drink a thing until this evening (I got her Friday)...the breeder said that is very common. For me, it was like the dog just suddenly realized that there was food and water and gorged! She still won't take a treat, but I'm confident she will be fine.

Hope this helps....And I would recommend "Dachshunds for Dummies," it was my favorite of the books I read on these dogs.

I just wanted to say that we are new to the board! My wife and I are the proud owners of a now 12 week old mini-doxie named Bailey. She is a great little girl, and she does the same thing you are talking about. She HATES to be alone. She will whine and cry and scratch on her gate when she knows someone is around. But if you let her out, she will learn that she can do those things and get her way. Don’t give in—its so hard though! but with a cute face like this:

how can you not feel horrible!

Just remember to be strong and don't give in. We are trying to start crate training Bailey--but she cries and cries so much that we don't have the heart to do it yet. I'll be posting some questions on that soon though.

Congrats on your new puppy! It will be a great addition.

HI!

I'm thrilled there are so many new Dachshund owners!!! My second favorite breed is Dachshunds having been raised with them.

You need to stay tough with the barking and whining. She will get past it once she knows it won't help.

Bailey is adorable!!!! I want a mini so bad, but my DH doesn't want one. Maybe someday.

Please folks, keep coming back and telling us stories!!!

Melody
