strange breathing/gasping and shivering

superyoks Feb 11, 2004 10:51 AM

my beagle sometimes starts breathing/gasping quickly almost as if he was choking or gasping for air from asthma. this doesn't happen all the time but it happens occasionally. we used to live in a basement apartment and i thought that the air was the reason that he was choking. we have moved to a second floor apartment since then and i thought it was over but he started gasping again today and he was shivering afterwards. i was told by a friend that some dogs have "backwards breathing", where they breathe through the bottom of their mouths. does anyone have any information about this? i would really appreciate it. thanks.

I have seen my 4 month old beagle do the same thing, however it doesnt seem to bother him... it just looks odd. Also, if I physically move him or distract him he stops... almost like its controllable. Sorry I dont have a better answer, but would appreciate hearing any information you recieve.

I think what you are discribing is what some folks call a reverse sneeze. It isn't dangerous for the dog, but just to make sure, I'd make an appointment with the vet and have him looked over.

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

With the shivering involved, it's time for a veterinary visit.
