Licking sore

jacki2 Feb 13, 2004 05:50 PM

Hi

I know there's another name for that but I cant remember it.

One of my dalmatians is a dog I rescued 2 years ago. He was a mess when I got him - skeletal, ears blocked with black gunk, ear flaps split wide open from scratching and shaking and sores/redness/rashes all over his body and between his toes. He had been locked in a shed 24/7 for several months and thrown food occassionally (god only knows what kind of food!). The dog refuge vet said it was all allergies. But it isnt. Some of it was behavioural, a lot of it was nutrition and lack of sunlight. I have managed to clear up and/or get him to stop licking all but one sore. Now 2 years later he still licks that one spot and it's constantly hairless and raw. Its located just above his foot on the front of one leg.

He is on an excellent raw food diet, and is glowingly healthy, no other health problems except the occassional recurrence of ear mites which I treat homeopathically. He also gets flax seed oil as well as a couple of other supplements.

Any ideas how to treat this last remaining sore? I have tried all the conventional sprays/creams/drugs/E collar etc....

He licks no matter what you put on it.

Thanks

A couple more things to try:

1) teach him a cue for chewing his toys. Everytime you see him even think about licking himself, get him a toy. Teach him to get the toy himself. Try toys with food inside them, and other things, to figure out what he likes, what toys work for him. Dogs need to use their mouths, and this is a major reason they need toys and they need conditioning to use their toys.

2) Spray Bitter Apple on the spot 4 times a day for at least 3 weeks. It won't hurt his skin, and doing it that often keeps it fresh enough to really taste bitter. Works for some dogs.

I am having kind of the same problem. I have a 11 year old Dal I have had since he was 18 weeks.. A little over a year ago it started with a sore on right back foot. He would lick and it would get red raw and bleed and scab over. But he would keep it there by licking..
At that time the vet thought Allergies & Nervous.. Tryed antibotics 3 times. didn't help much. He is also on Rimadyl now and has been on Amitriptyline for 2weeks he is a very nervous dog.. (He is my shadow is always where I am, sleeps with me, lays by the tub when I take a bath etc.. When I leave to town I have to leave the TV, Radios on & lights).
Will now after 16 months he has these all over, Legs, feet & Bottoms,Between toes, inner/outer thighs some on back & sides and 1 on his private.
He also has a very dry nose on top and along sides crack & rough . But still has running nose once in a while..
I took him to the vet 2 days ago. They did a stool and a skin scraping :"Both were my idea"
They cam up negative other then the scraping of the drain tracts had Bacterial & Yeast so he is now also on Cepahlexin & Ketoconozle.. The vet says he doesn't know what to say.. He is pushing for a dermatologist. Which is aver 4 hours away.. He isn't in any pain. And it seem not to be catchy the vet says.. But I have been doctoring for itchy skin rash.
I am washing bedding everyday and with his feet & body bleeding I am cleaning floors & furniture all the time..
I did change his food a week ago to senstive skin.. I am wondering what you did to clear this up? Or if someone else has any ideas... I can not give up on him I saved him when he was 18 weeks old from being destroyed I can't stop now..
