some questions about beagles

stuffyp Mar 05, 2004 07:24 PM

Hi! I am new to this forum so I hope you may help me with any problems, etc. My family and I are planning to get a beagle pup in June, but I still would like to clarify some traits of beagles. Is it true that beagles aren't obedient? Can they be jogging buddies? Also, are there any differences between the two sexes? Thanks in advance!

Beagles were bred to hunt rabbits in packs, so you shouldn't expect a Beagle to respond to a human the way a retrieving or herding dog would. Beagles are very noisy, because humans found the baying useful for keeping track of the pack. Beagles can have housetraining difficulties, because they tend to be a bit less fussy than some breeds about keeping their bed area clean.

As far as jogging, all dogs have difficulty with this on human terms. Running barefoot on pavement can take the footpads down to blood. Running on warm pavement will burn off the skin on the foot pads. Running in temperatures and humidity conditions that do not allow for efficient evaporative cooling can kill a dog quickly. Dogs have very inefficient body cooling systems that cannot endure the amount of heat that a human can. Temperatures over 85 degrees are too hot for dogs to exercise, and for dogs not in the peak of condition the limit has to be tighter.

Young and old dogs have further limitations on exercise, especially forced exercise such as jogging. You need to be ready to stop at any time it's too much for the dog. Sometimes this is not a good fit with a human's exercise mentality.

Walking is a safer exercise to do with a dog, but some can function as jogging partners on some days when weather is favorable for some of the stages of their lives.
