Dog Litter Training and Puppy Mouthing Question

sschan Mar 05, 2004 07:38 PM

I just got our Yorkie three weeks ago and decided to start her on dog litter training. She is 15 weeks old and she's been doing pretty well for the most part. My only question is if I take her to my sister's house, should I take an extra dog litter pan there as well? I'm not sure how to approach this.

Also, I've read about how we should curb puppy mouthing early. Does this mean that even if she lightly puts our finger in her mouth we should stop her?

Thanks for reading this.

I'm not really sold on litter pan training, but Purina makes the dog litter boxes and the special dog litter, and they have a website with the training instructions, so you might want to check that out.

Yes, every single time the dog puts teeth on human skin, you need to remind her not to do that. But don't be mean or rough about it. Just be consistent.

Hi, I don't have a Yorkie, I post on the Shiba forum. I can't say as I know much about the litter training, however the mouthing should be stopped as soon as it happens. This is a natural behavior and is common to young puppys. If the mouthing happens during play time, then a gentle but firm no and an immediate end to the play time should occur. If the mouthing happens all the time, you could also try training your pup with the leash. This gives you a little more control and when the puppy mouths, then a gentle pull back on the leash with another firm but gentle no command would be in order. You may have to repeat this process many times before your pup gets the hint but it will be well worth the effort for the future. Good luck and post back with any results.

Thanks for your reply. We have been trying everything to get her to stop but the minute she's out of her play area, she's biting our toes. We've tried saying "no" firmly, saying "ouch" and stop playing, etc. We haven't tried the leash so that's what we'll try next. We are also starting to put her back in her play area and seeing if that helps. Thanks for your suggestion...

You're very welcome. Good Luck and don't despair it will take some time but it will eventually work out for you. One other thing with the leash, since the pup will want to be around you, you can also use it as a sort of time out, by tying the leash to a table leg away from you for a few minutes is she doesn't want to behave...about 5 minutes or so should be sufficient. The key is to be consistant, be gentle but firm and use lots of positive reinforcement. Don't forget to praise your pup when she does well and what you expect her to do. You could also try substituting a soft chew toy or something similar to occupy your pups mouth.
