Severe Nasal Mucous

skylark Mar 11, 2004 10:13 PM

Help:

Our mini-short hair (Tara) is 11 and about 16 months ago, developed a strange discharge from her nose. It is a very, very, sticky mucous and generally discharges as one long piece (2" to 3" long)

We have to take her routinely to the vets to get her flushed out.

She tested negative for fungus.
Negative for tooth fistula.
Negative for obstruction.

It gets infected from time-to-time and she, as of 2 days ago, is on Amoxicillon for 14 days.

Does anyone know what this might be? The vet feels it may be some kind of hyperactive gland in the nose but is at a complete loss to explain it. he has tried anti-histamines and she also is on benadryl and epinephrine nasal drops.

Besides a very tired dog, she just let out a 3" long discharge and yet she was flushed out 2 days ago.

Any suggestions????? Any leads???? I am in Vancouver and can get no vet to explain what i shappening here.

I am so sorry to hear your poor baby going through this. I don't have any suggestions for you. Do you have other vets or maybe a specialist around? How about an University that has a vet school?

I hope someone figures this out for you and your baby gets to feeling better.

Hi:

And the worst part of it is, she is so apparently healthy. We don't have any schools, etc., who can assist either and I actually called a vet in Tennessee who is a nasal expert and his lead (teeth) didn't pan out.

Thanks for your support,

Greg

I'm glad to hear she seems healthy, but I can't imagine this is healthy. Has nasal cancer or anything like that been ruled out? Allergies? Geez, this can't be fun for either of you.

Eureca!! Oddly enough, I requested yet another nose sample (and it was a 3" long solid piece of nose mucous) and a strange thing happened - for the very FIRST time in many samples, a yeast showed up. A very peculiar yeat the Doctor feels is one of the sinus cavaties and has been residing there for 16 months.

He put her on an anti-yeast drop (very thick drops that go in her ears and her nose) and within one day she was breathing better. Today, after the second full day, she hardly has any difficulty breathing.

She is getting so well, she went through her morning ritual with me (and it takes some 10 minutes) and went out the front door for a poop -- the first time in months. She even barked when the doorbell rang today - a milestone.

I'll try to post a picture of her for you - she is a great little mini who is 11 and is getting back to her old ways of mischief. Oddly enough, all the time, she has been hungry, etc., except for this weird discharge.

Keep this yeast infection in mind if you see other daschunds with nose problems as it is generaly not indicated - they look for fungus and other infections (fistulas, etc) and you get into a huge search for the cause. I believe this yeast should have shown up in the mucous immediately and can't figure out how it suddenly materialized.

Spent on diagnosis - about $4,000.00 on flushes, tests, emergency visits (I had to resucitate her at one point), x-rays, scans, blood tests, dental scans, nasal scans, nasal tests, etc. The last flush was $400.00.

Well, looks like we turned the corner........

I am always available at greg1234@canada.com if you need to chat,

Greg

Woohoo!!! So glad it has been found! I'm happy the vet finally found out what the problem was and she is getting some relief. It is hard to believe that it took this long to figure it out.

We have a few other Dachshund owners here, who seem to have disappeared all of a sudden. I hope you will stick around and share your baby with us. I don't get to my folks house often enough to see my baby girl there. So I like coming here to read about other Dachshunds.
