Fighting for Alpha spot

Dogcrazy Mar 12, 2004 04:04 PM

I'm so happy to find this forum in my frantic search for advise on a somewhat major problem. Hopefully someone can give me some help.

I have a 5 year old Poodle Dachshund mix, Wiggles, who has been with me since she was a pup. I also have a 14 month old female Yorkie, named Cricket who I have had since she was 8 weeks old. The two have been the best of friends for a year now.

I took Cricket to the groomer and when we returned home, she tore into Wiggles with a vengence. This viscous agression has lasted for 3 days, and resulted in me being bitten by Cricket once and unsure who got me the other time.

Cricket has always been extremely insecure, wants to be held at anytime there is stress, doesn't like being left alone, etc. I can only assume she is suddenly fighting for dominance. I consider myself leader of the pack but Wiggles is my right-hand dog and she will fight for that spot.

What can I do to stop this agression from a 3.5 lb bundle of fire? I can't keep separating them for the rest of their lives and want them to live in the harmony they once had.

Sorry this is so long, and thanks for any help you can give. Diane

Your younger dog is maturing. Two female dogs kept together and one of them a terrier, well, this was predictable. You may have no choice but to keep them permanently separated. A behavior specialist in person can help you sort things out.

Thank you for your reply and the suggestion of professional help. I thought I'd have to get a psychiatrist for all of us if this didn't stop. After I posted my question, I decided to bite the bullet and put them together in the yard (supervised) and see what happened. Absolutely nothing! Not even a growl or a snarl. And last night, they both lay side by side, touching, with not a sound.

I guess time does heal all wounds, what ever they are. I can't wait till Cricket comes in heat - Wiggles is spayed, so I'm wondering if I'll have a repeat of this weeks chaois. I guess I'll know when it happens and deal with it then.

Thanks again for your help. It is and was appreciated.
Diane

Hi,

Do you plan on breeding Cricket? If not, I believe that spaying her will help with the aggression between the two. I may be wrong though you probably should ask around and see if this is possible.
