New mom, Need help with food.

dutchessmom Mar 15, 2004 09:10 AM

Hey Guys,

I am trying to make sure that I am going to be feeding my baby the best food possible for her overall health and Coat. Her previous mom fed her Hi-Pro, I was switching her to Nutra Nature's Choice. Which is better that or Nature's Best? I am also giving her a multi Vitamin each morning. Any help and advise will be greatly appriciated.

personally, I really like Canidae. Wellness, California Natural, etc. are also great foods. Canidae is not too expensive and is an excellent food with 4 human grade meats in it.

A Dog Owner's Prayer

Oh Lord, don't let me once forget how I love my trusty pet.
Help me learn to disregard canine craters in my yard.
Show me how to be a buddy even when my sofa's muddy.
Don't allow my pooch to munch postal carriers for lunch.
Shield my neighbor's cat from view--guide my steps around the doo.
Train me not to curse and scowl when it's puppy's night to howl.
Grant I shan't awake in fear with a cold nose in my ear.
Give me patience without end--help me be my dog's "best friend".

With foods, there is a huge selection to chose from. Make sure that you a feeding a high quality kibble - look at the ingredients. Each dog is different. If what you are feeding seems to keep your dog in good health then it is probably fine - if it does not, then try something else. Some dogs will have allergies to some ingredients - you won't know until you feed it for awhile.
I have fed Pro-plan, Canidae, and am looking at switching to California Natural. I also supplement with vit E, Vit C, and fish oil.
In looking at your picture (very cute baby), her nails are very long. I would suggest starting with a dremel (course grit sandpaper) and touching them up every week. It is best to start this young, and with a dremel, there is less chance of nicking the quick. I do nails every week - it is not fun but my Doberman suffers through it - and her nails do not touch the ground.
Good luck!

Try to get a dog food which is high in protein (around 28%). I use Supa Active for working dogs which you can also get for a puppy but I live in Scotland and don't know if it would be avaliable in America. I mix some dog meat in with the food and also some beef dripping for substance. My dobie is now 17 months old and weighs 40 kg
