she wants to eat our bird!!

equium Mar 24, 2004 10:38 AM

hello, i am new here. we have a mini-dachshund that we took in from a terminally ill senior. she took to us and our other dog in no time at all. we currently have 7 children in the home. the child count changes because we also do foster care. my wife also runs a daycare. this dog gets along with everyone. oh, sure, she barks at anyone at the front door, but i like the notification she provides. we had lost 2 chihuahua's in a matter of 2 months, so "Jingles" was a welcome sight. i have fallen in love with this dog for mainly this reason:when my wife is home, I still exist! with our chihuahuas, they would not give me the time of day if my wife was home; but not jingles. she greets me everyday at the door and we play for a while. it's actually quite the sight to see: i'm 200lbs, got a shaved head, mustache and goatee, and i look like i just hopped on a Harley motercycle (but i didn't). OK, ON TO MY QUESTION!
my wife just brought home a Coakatiel bird that she bought for my daughter. Jingles went nuts! all she does is hang out under the cage stand and wimper. at first we thought she wanted to play with it, so we picked her up to the cage and she snapped at the bird. What gives? is this the "hunting" part of her breeding? i pray that bird never gets on the floor. sorry for the long post. i thank all in advance for any responses.

You can do some training to teach the dog how to be calm around the bird. Basically it's a matter of giving her treats for looking at you instead of the bird, and praising/treating for behaving calmly around the bird. I wouldn't leave dog and bird alone together, ever. Could be an awful shock for the kids if the dog killed the bird.
