Bailey Eating a Bug

katie_and_gabe Mar 27, 2004 11:29 AM

Bailey loves to pounce on things, and she found a cricket outside. She grabbed it and was chewing on it before I knew what she was doing. Is it poisonous for a dog to eat a bug?

Thanks,
Katie and Gabe

Nay, a bug won't hurt her. Maybe get some extra protein. My cat eats bugs all the time and it hasn't hurt him yet. He has become a greyt fly catcher.

Crickets do carry a parasite dogs can catch. Many bugs bite, sting, or are toxic. Dogs have died from swallowing wasps, had reactions to bees, etc. I teach my dogs to leave bugs alone these days, and life is much less scary than it was when my dogs considered every crawling and flying object a game and a snack.

Funny story, Melody, I walked past my hubby on the sofa with Spirit in his lap awhile back. He was amused by her focus on a bug flying around the light of the lamp, and she was very intent on it. Just in passing, I said, don't let her do that, distract her. He said something to her, and instantly she looked away from the bug and her whole body and expression relaxed. She just forgot all about it. Amazing how much difference it makes for us to encourage a dog one way or another!
