still likes to mark in the house

cmgarcia Mar 29, 2004 11:47 PM

Hello I am new to this forum and also new to owning a beagle. Elie was brought into our home after being found by a friend of a friend in the streets of miami. He was in great condition when found ( still is ))by the friend who housed him for three weeks, sending info and pictures to local shelters with no results of locating the original owner. Having three dogs allready, he could not keep the Beagle. With the passing of Candy My father in laws [bleep]zu, My wife and more soo my 5 year old daughter were devestated. Rayna was candy's care taker when Pop Pop would go out of town. She loved her very much and was very attached. We thought about getting a dog (we have a cat already Phoebe) and looked around at pet stores and the pound but put the idea on the backburner after discussing the amount of work having a dog would be on top of having Rayna Phoebe and the newest addition to our family 8 month old Rachel. Well a few weeks after Candy passed ,My friend Raul called me to tell me a friend from work had found a beagle and could not locate the owners. He would only give him to a good home. Well the next day I was in the car heading towards hialleah to meet Chucho. Chucho (now better known as Elie) was a beautiful male beagle probably about A year old. He is a 13 inch with fabulous features. His markings, the way he carries his tail high and proud, and best of all His easy going temperment. Very important with the kids. We have had Elie for about 2 weeks now and have been making progrees. He is in the procees of being crate trained ( especialy when it's our dinner time) and is on a pretty good potty schedule. I work at night and my wife Nicole works during the day so there is always someone home with Elie. Yes he is a bit stubborn as expected of this breed but each day and countlees amounts of treats shows better results. He is very smart, mischevious, and oohhhh soo wonderful with the kids. Rachel likes to tug his ears a bit and he just sits there and loves it. Ive realized when walking him its a bit of a compromise as with who goes where. He responds well to the command "come" and will usually follow unless distracted by other four footed friends, or his wonderfull nose which he gave me a taste of its power this past weekend in Sebastian FL visiting Pop Pop and MILO his new 10 week old [bleep]zu. I was walking Elie one night when we accidentally spooked something (Rabbit or Fox I think) out of a neighbors adjacent empty lot. Whell Elie gave chase with me running be hind wishing I had a few more feet on my 6 foot lead. Around a wooden fence and through some bushes into somone elses yard, I tried to call off the chase being it was 12:30 at night in a strangers yard. Elie was not happy soo we decided to find our suspect. With a display of some frantic back and fourth sweeps of sections of the yard with nose glued to the moist grass grunting and snorting it was not long till Elie led usbehind an RV Passed the shed and then bolted towards another wooden fence wher he dove under a hole in the fence and started baying and howling. My face lit up with excitement and pride.I had to litterally drag Elie out From under the fence fearing if he made it all the way under I would never see him or the critter again. Elie enjoyed an extra helping of his favorite treat,Kong filled with peanut butter after tha performance. Well now that you know a little (or alot) about us I would like to adress our problem. Elie has a tendency to Mark inside our house. He will go outside and pee on our walks each about 15 to 20 minutes to where he lifts his leg and tries to mark but nothing comes out, And still be able to mark inside the house shortly after we return. he is capable of going long periods of time without peeing but has to bee under close supervision. As I said we are crate training him ( he still barks a bit at first when left in the crate)and I have even attached his lead to my belt when in the house but sometimes he just sneeks one in when your not looking. Would neutering help this? Is this a territorial issue or a housebreaking problem. I know consistency is key but there are times that this stay at home dad has to turn his back for a second to tend to the other creatures who dwell here too.:O) Well let me end this before I use up all the space in this forum. thank you for any advice or help. One other thing. Is peanut butter bad for beagles. I heard fresh cooked vegies are good treats as well as egg white( hard boiled) Oh well I will post some pictures soon.

Hi and welcome!

I'm happy to meet you and Elie and hope you will stop back often and tell us more about this wonderful boy. With pictures!!!!!

Anyway, neutering would probably help a great deal. It would also prevent him from trying to wander if he smells a female in heat and you know what a beagles nose is like. Males also can get testicle cancer and other unwanted health issues.

Sounds like you are already doing what is necessary to try to break him of marking in the house. Make sure that you clean the areas he was marked with a special product that eliminates the odor. I think it is called Nature's Miracle. It has stuff that breaks down the urine and removes the smell. Regular cleaning won't get rid of it all and he will continue to go back and use those spots.

Occasional peanut butter won't hurt him as long as he doesn't have a weight problem. I give it to my girls sometimes as a treat in a kong. I've also given my girls green beans, broccoli, carrots, even raw carrots as a treat. I've even tossed a raw egg into their kibble occasionally without any problems.

Good luck with your new addition and please keep us posted on how he is doing!

I loved your story of your new furbaby. You will have to tell more. You are sure lucky it wasn't a skunk under that fence!!
I don't own a beagle so I'm not much help with advice. I do think for all male dogs it's best to fix them if they aren't being shown and will help prevent dieases, and keep them close to home.
Good luck with your new dog.
