Question: Anyone know if a Great Dane can keep up with horses?

kristi_mcclary Apr 05, 2004 02:30 PM

Hi. I have a question. I am very familiar with the breed, but am really trying to find out if a Great Dane has the endurance ability to keep up with horses during horseback riding. I have had Danes in the past and they are by far the best breed of dog for me, but before committing to another dog at this point in my life I want to make sure he/she would fit into my lifestyle. I ride horses a lot and camp and would like to be able to have a dog that I can take along. Most large breeds are too stocky and cannot keep up with horses. Anyone have Danes & horses that might be able to answer this for me?

Thanks so much for any info you may be able to provide.

Krist

My friends have a dane. The breeder told them that he shouldn't run a lot. I would think running along behind a horse for a couple of hours won't be a good idea for a dane. Your best bet would be to contact a breeder and ask them.

well, our danes keep up with the horses fine, but they rarely go with us, unless were doing slow trail rides. Their joints can really take a beating with all that running and it could lead to problems later in life. It also increases the risk of bloat. IMHO danes arent the best choice for running along with horses. But if your careful and take preventative measures for the possible health problems I dont think a couple of light runs a week would hurt.

(this is my opinion based on past experiences, I am NOT an expert)
