miniature pinschers and dilute "gene" question?

MiniLove Apr 13, 2004 03:07 AM

First I just wanted to say, Hi! I am new to this forum. I have been doing an awful lot of research and have found nothing but heated debate and unclear oppinion on whether or not the chocolate/tan miniature pinscher is a dilute. I was wondering if anyother min pin person may know the answer to this question. I was simply trying to find out if the choco. carries the dd "gene"? To anyone that may know I appriciate your help. We will soon have finished my bitch and I am debating on planning a breeding, she is not a choc. nor is the dog I have my eye on, but I am not about to breed until I have a full understanding of the min pin.'s genetics. Also any oppinion on were the dilutes blue and fawn originated and if you feel it came from an outside influence or not?

OK, first off, I'm not a min pin breeder lOL

Do they have black pigment and dark eyes? Dilutes will have light pigment and light eyes for the most part. Best place to ask tho, is min pin breeders

Thanks PHBorzoi. I have since gotten in touch with my mentor to answer my questions and should have come back and posted my findings. I now know that the choco. is not a dilute. The Fawn is the dilute of chocolate as the blue is the dilute of black. And the CDA problems occur much more often in Dobermans than in Min Pin.'s. It is alot less of a concern in Min Pin.'s but a concern just the same and is a good thing to avoid.I have also found out for any Min Pin breeder who maybe interested in breeding to actually preserve the dilutes that it is VERY unwise to breed dilute x dilute, only breed a very high quality dilute to another quality dog that DOES NOT carry any dilute genes.
Anyways I hope that that was helpful for any Min Pin folks and PHBorzoi Thanx for the reply!

Also I found that the blue and fawns did not come from any outside influence, it is amazing what some will say is true to your breed just because it is true to theirs. I got the idea that there may have been an outside influence from a pomeranian breeder who felt that it was the same for min pin.'s because most beleive that merle poms and chi.'s are the result of a sheltie cross breeding. It does not hold true for the min pin. Blue and fawn did come about within the breed it's self.
