Defecation rates???

HotRodHerps Oct 09, 2003 09:10 AM

I got a yearling female Sumatran (brongersmai) in February. She ahs grown from 2 to 4 feet and weighs 5lbs. Since February she has only defecated once, in June (it was a doozy let me tell you). I have tried bathing her in warm water but to no avail. She appears to be healthy otherwise. The only info on the subject that I could find was a comment on VPI.com that said that they normally do have lower defecation rates but I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar experience??? Here's a pic:

Hey,
Here are some of the defecation data and dates for my male and female alike Red bloods. From the records you can see that there is not much BM, activity, but the animals do pass urine, not urates, quite often after prolonged drinking.
Sample card Evacuation dates:
Male:
9/18/2002
12/13/2002
Urates:3/5/03
4/16/2003
6/4/2003
9/11/2003
Female:
12/14/2002
Urates-12/30/2002
9/18/2002
5/10/2003
7/12/2003
8/26/2003

As you can see the female did not have a bm=bowel movement, once, for quite some time, but did eventually. If it does not go for longer than that (5months), I would definately want to have it checked out by a qualified reptile vet, if you can find one in your area. All the best! - Angel

Thanks Angel! Great job on the record keeping, I think many people underestimate the importance of good record keeping. I'll give her another month then I'll take her to a vet if I can find a decent one in my area. The last time I took my JCP to the vet he said he was really worried b'cos it's tongue was blue(!?!).

Bloods dont deficate much at all, mine is starting to get more common as he starts growing more it seems. You can feel around her lower region a few inches above the tip of the tail and feel if theres a large load in there. Alot of times you can even see the snakes sides bulging out in this area while the defication builds up. I swear mine laid one that weighed more than he did one time! If they need to go and they need some help you can soak them in some luke warm water and it'll pop right out. Mine will sometimes do it when he gets irritated ie. if your handling when he doesnt want to be, which is always a wonderful surprise! When someone wants to hold him thats afraid hell bite I just say dont worry he wont bite...but he might sh!t on ya! I would definately try soaking your snake, ive even just trown him in the shower and turned it on he seemed to like it, but its a messy clean up.
