Beagle.....hunching

panzerismybeagle Apr 18, 2004 02:01 PM

My beagle's now about 9 mos old and he's getting where he likes to hump legs and just about anything else. He's an only dog kept w/3 cats and anytime I take him to mingle w/other dogs, all he wants to do is 'it', be it a male or female dog.

Is this something I'll just have to tolerate or will he grow out of it? I'm thinking of gettin him neutered, especially now that this behavior has started, but was wanting other opinions.

Is there a reason you were not going to have him neutered? Neutering will certainly help that. I have a 10 year old beagle and only once in a while will be do that (very rarely) but then he has been neutered.

Well, we were thinking of breeding him at some point, but it's lookin' like that's not going to happen.

He loves to go places and meet other dogs, but it's just so embarassing when he does this kinda' stuff, and i know it's natural and all, but i'm sure most of ya' understand that it's horrible to meet a fellow dog owner cuz ur dog been hunching on their male dog. lol

My advice would be to neuter him, unless there is an absolutely extroadorinary features(s) about him that you believe should allow him to be bred. I would neuter him as soon as possible also, because although neutering can help, if you allow it to go on for too along before neutering him, then many dogs continue to attempt to hump other dogs or objects out of habit. As soon as my dog began to hump things at about the same age as yours, we had him neutered and now he's just fine, and never does anything of the sort anymore.

Good luck, and keep us updated!

I would also urge you to get him neutered. Not only will it stop some behavior, he will be a much happier and healthier boy.

When he does start this behavior, you need to redirect his attention and make him stop. It is rude for a dog to do this, and sometime he's going to do this to the wrong dog and he will be attacked.

Good luck!
