Should I keep a male or female pup?

carolinagirl Apr 20, 2004 09:28 AM

My female Rottie had a small litter 3 weeks ago (4 pups). The pups all have homes already, which was arranged before she was even bred. I am keeping one of the pups. My female is a very domanant bitch, and I need advise. As the pup grows into adulthood, would she be more likely to get along with a female or male? If I keep I male, it would be neutered top prevent any accidents. Thanks!

A male is the better choice to live with a female. Fights between two female dogs will sometimes go to the death.

Thanks, that is sort of what I was thinking. Years ago, I had Jack Russel Terriers and I could never kennel two males or two females together. Male and Female was OK. And I knew of a lady nearby that kept a female Rottie pup and when that pup matured and tried to dominate her mother, she was killed. I think she was two when her mother killed her. I would hate for that to happen.

My favorite pup in the litter is a male. Beautiful pup, and very smart. He was the first to climb out of the nest box, the first to explore the yard once they moved outside, always the first to tumble out of the dog house when I come near, and yesterday I caught him eating dry puppy food out of his mothers bowl. They will be 4 weeks on Saturday. They barely have teeth and he's ready for real food. I have always liked female dogs better, but I think the male will be safer.

Thanks again.
