If you got this dog from a good breeder, that's the person to talk to about whether or not to breed him, and when. If you didn't get the dog from a good breeder, he shouldn't be bred. Either way, one thing you need to know is that if you use this little guy as a stud dog, you may never be able to completely housetrain him. Best bet for a healthy, housetrained, good-tempered Shih Tzu would be to neuter at around 6 months of age.

cherub, hi! I would suggest at least showing him or going to a few shows and learn to criteque your dog first, if he came from a good breeder than she/he can help and should gladly be your mentor in this. Then make sure the females are of breeding quality, be selective, make sure there aren't any health problems in your dog or the females, if these females have been bred before you want tests done before the breeding also to insure that they do not have any STD's. Remember also why you bought your shih, was it to breed and show or as a family pet? He may be very territorial and mark his home if he studs. Don't do this if you are doing it to make some extra money, you will find that by the time you get the proper health cert.'s it will be more of a labor of love of the breed and a bit more of an exspernce than a profit. Also I myself have not made the jump to breeding yet, but I know many breeders who will not stud until about 1 and a half years for proper health tests.
