Savannah is teething

furyhockey77 Apr 25, 2004 04:55 PM

Hello everyone... savannah is teething and has lost 3 teeth today... is this normal? She is also having a terrible time with housetraining... she is becoming very stubborn about going outside the last few days. Do you think this might have to do with her teething?

Thanks,

Lori and Ryan

Puppies need to lose all their baby teeth to make room for the permanent teeth. The rate at which the old teeth go out and the new ones come in is variable. Losing them is certainly normal, and she may have been doing a lot of chewing today that helped things along. I would avoid tug-of-war with her.

Teething can be painful and stressful and could conceivably affect housetraining and other behavior and training. Be sure to use good positive handling techniques that help her learn what you want her to do rather than punishing for mistakes. Take her out often, supervise her in the house, etc. Good management, in other words. Always best with a puppy.

Thank you for the quick response. She definitely has not been herself lately and the teething has caused some mild bleeding so I would imagine she is in at least a bit of pain. Thanks for your encouragement...

I have managed to save four of Gretal's baby teeth. While she was sitting with me, over the course of one week, I would hear a small "ping" on the floor and notice that Gretal was very interested in the sound as well.... It was her teeth falling out and hitting the floor! I don't remember issues with accidents, just teeth falling out!

P.S
Gretal loves the Spring grass and beautiful weather.
