14 month old english bulldog to buy, or not to buy????

ron11 Apr 26, 2004 08:03 PM

We have recently went to look at a 14 month old female english bulldog with the interest of purchasing one. When we first walked through the door all the dog wanted to do was jump on us and lick us to death. It also started to hump. This dog is 14 months old and has not yet been spaded. I guess my question is would I be able to break this jumping habit at this age?? The owner says she would settle down after we left but just gets excited when seeing other people. Is this normal for a 14 month old english bulldog and would getting it spaded help correct the humping problem??? We think it is a great dog and are really interested in purchasing her but have the fear of not being able to correct this problem at the age it is at. The owner is moving and is unable to bring the dog with him, It seems as it has a great home shared with a bigaun friese. He also likes to jump at shadows on the wall. Could this dog still be in a puppy stage at this age or is this normal for a 14 month old english bulldog?? If you have any information, a reply would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Really want this dog but want to make sure of this.

I would not hesitate to adopt the dog if I wanted an English Bulldog. The humping could indicate an infection, something the veterinarian can check out when spaying her. You'll need to take your dog to training class, wherever you get a dog, and a dog her age will train much more quickly than a puppy would.

Just one thing. I wish you would think of it as an adoption rather than a purchase. You're looking to bring a new member into your family, right, not buy a new dishwasher?! It's going to cost a lot more to take care of a dog than it ever will to pay the breeding expenses and adopt the dog in the first place.

English Bulldogs are short, but they are quite heavy and large dogs. You need to be prepared to go to training class with this dog, as you need to do with almost any dog you might adopt (a really old dog or a really sick one might not need training class). I certainly wouldn't be afraid to adopt the dog you describe. I like that age very much.

I agree with Kathy. If this is the type of dog you want, I'd get her. I've heard that humping is typically a dominance thing. I would imagine getting here spayed and some training would stop this.

Good luck and Let us know what you decide!
