New BC, question

stephanie_army Apr 30, 2004 04:03 PM

We just bought a new border collie pup, registered, and are looking to give her the best possible life. Since we have had her only two days, the main question I have to ask is what is the best store bought food FOR a BC? I know homemade food is the best for them as you can add in all the nutrients she would need, but in a busy home with a one year old, this is not possible. Does anyone know what is best for a BC puppie? If so, please respond fairly quickly as I do not arrpove of the pet food that the store where we bought her was feeding her. I would like to work on switching it A.S.A.P. Thank you, Stephanie

Welcome! Also, Congrats on your new BC! My BC gals name is Reata. I have had her for 2 1/2 years. We compete in agility and she is amazing! I feed my dogs Nutra Nuggets, its lamb and rice based. She does very well on it.

Hi there, I don't own a BC but thought I would respond anyway, hope no one minds. The rule of thumb is that if you can buy it in a grocery store it is no good for your pets. I feed Wellness which is an excellent brand, it contains hormone free meats, no corn or fillers and is baked not rendered or extruded.

Other superpremiums are, Canade, Innova, California Natural just to name a few. These are usually found through an indepedant retailer. I know Wellness does not sell to chain stores because it is made in small controled batches and they do not want to mass produce it. These foods are more expensive but also you feed much less because there are no fillers and chemicals, so it really does even out. Here are some links to help you better understand all of the really nasty stuff that goes into comercially produced foods (cancerous tissue, euthaized pets, BHA etc).
