Back Problem

kbjacob May 01, 2004 11:44 PM

My 3 year old doxie started showing symptoms of back problems last night (wobbly back legs, but could still walk). I took him to the emergency vet clinic where he was prescribed Prednisone. Today, he seems perfectly fine. No problems whatsover! I have an appt. on Monday morning with his regular vet, but am wondering if I need to keep him confined to his crate until then. So far, I've pretty much kept him confined except for a few minutes of freedom now & then. He's also spending a lot of time on my lap whenever I am sitting down! I feel guilty keeping him in the crate when he seems to be fine.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Three years old seems young? I have read that Doxies are prone to back problems. Is your dog active, running up and down steps and jumping off chairs? I wonder about my little pup. She loves to run, dig, and jump. Its hard to keep her still. Good luck at the vets and keep us posted.

I'm so sorry to hear about your baby! I'd keep him in the crate when you can't supervise him. Otherwise, keep him as quiet as you can. No jumping whatsoever. Pick him up to put him in your lap and don't let him jump down. No running, climbing stairs or anything. Keep him on a leash when going outside for potty, so he doesn't run around the yard.

He may not have real back problems right now, but may have just pulled a muscle. Let's hope for the best.

In the meantime, don't feel guilty. You're doing the best for him by keeping him as quiet as can be.

Come tell us what your vet says!

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

No running, no jumping, and that includes jumping up and down off your lap. No moments of freedom. A LOT can be riding on your keeping this dog on absolute restricted activity right now. Don't blow it!!!!
