JRT excessive shedding

trivunic May 07, 2004 06:44 PM

Hello everyone, I have a question for the JRT owners. My dog is a 13 month old female JRT (short). She has never had any health problems, however, she is shedding A LOT !!! In fact it is so severe that if I run my hand up and down her back for about 20 seconds, the grass underneath and around her turns completely white. I have never seen this and would like to know whether this is even normal or not. Vet says it's normal but i'm not convinced since I have never seen a dog shed so much yet never develop bald spots. I am puzzeled as to how she can regrow all the hair that falls out. I bathe her once a month or so using tearless dog shampoo. Her diet is mostly dry dog food, which i thought was causing the problem at first, and after switching like 10 brands finally found out it is not the food. So is this normal of not ?

Thank you for reading my "short" post, and all feedback will greatly be appreciated.

You were a good dog-parent to take your girl to the veterinarian for a check! You also mentioned no bare spots on the skin, and that your dog is 13 months old. Sounds like maybe she is combining a change of coat due to season (Spring) with perhaps changing from puppy coat to adult coat. If she has recently been spayed, that will trigger a coat blow, too, and so will a heat cycle. Plus, some females blow coat again about 4 mos after a heat cycle. I expect that as your veterinarian says, it's normal. If you've had her spayed, she may never blow coat to this extent again.
